Obituary of Joel McFarland FullerIN THE CARE OF
Preston-Joel McFarland Fuller, 85, of Preston, Connecticut, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Nov. 18, 2024. He was born in Woonsocket, RI, on May 15, 1939, to John and Virginia (Wilkins) Fuller. He was schooled in East Walpole, MA; Bridgeton Academy; and Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering in 1964. Throughout his 4 years at the Academy, he sailed with his classmates to foreign ports on the school’s training ship, the State of Maine. After graduation, he married in the Fall of 1964, Janice (Blaine) Fuller, and shipped for two years with Lykes Bros. out of Galveston and Houston, Texas; taking supplies to Vietnam for our military during the Vietnam War. After the 2-year stint in world shipping, he relocated to Groton, CT, where he took a position in engineering at General Dynamics/Electric Boat where he stayed for 36 years, often being sent to the Prototype in Saratoga Springs, NY; working on restorations on the Nautilus, trouble-shooting trips to Charleston, SC, and riding “boats” on their sea trials.He took great pride in being a father to his namesake (Joel II) who will dearly miss him and the life lessons they shared. He especially enjoyed the teaching of the McFarland clan heritage drawing from his family tree. Joel also was heavily involved with planning and supporting the now defunct Rhode Island Scottish Highland Festival where he and Jan met many of their friends.He also loved kayaking with his male friends and his wife, Jan. The Avalonia Land Conservancy group was also part of his plan to enjoy life. Roaming the fields, setting up bluebird houses, planning paths so that others could enjoy strolls through the fields and woods was a great part of his life.Joel was an active member of the Free Masons; first by joining the Masonic Lodge in Castine, ME, while a midshipman at the academy. He later joined Coastal 57 in Pawcatuck, CT; as well as, taking the Scottish Rite at Somerset St. James in Norwich, CT.Joel was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Fuller, and is survived by his loving wife Janice, his son Joel II (Angela) and their two children Azariah and Dylan of Uncasville, CT; and a brother John Fuller of Mechanicsville, VA. His memory will live on in the hearts of several nieces and nephews. ALSO, PLEASE note, as you walk in there will be a map showing the location off certain areas of interest, such as the famous Highland Games, opening & closing ceremonies and pipe band presentations, animals, Clan Village, Highland Dance competitions, Harp & Fiddle tens and so on. Please take note of any times that certain events will happen such as in our main entertainment tent, our secondary entertainment area and so on.

Hello Everyone,
Our festival committee would like to let everyone know that we have NOT raised our admission price for entry to our Highland Festival & Games on Sunday, October 13, 2024, which have been moved to the Brooklyn Connecticut Fairgrounds.
That being said, we would also like to let you know about parking at the festival. We will no longer have to use shuttle busses to bring you in, there is plenty of parking on level areas very close to our gate entry. In the past, we have had to beg & borrow people from many different groups to try to assist us with the parking at all of our different locations.
This year and as long as we will be at the Brooklyn Fair grounds, the Mortlake Fire Department will Happily be performing the parking lot duties for us.
WE would like EVERYONE to know that there will be a $3.00 charge for the parking of ALL vehicles and all of that money will go directly to the Mortlake Fire Department for this very much needed assistance.
WE would like to thank the Mortlake Fire Department members for this assistance and appreciate all that this task entails. We look forward in working with you and all of the Brooklyn Fair committee as we move to our new home, "Brooklyn is now our Scotland" , we hope that everyone will enjoy all of festival to come. The Brooklyn Fair is located at 15 Fairgrounds Road, just off Route 169 in Brooklyn, CT. It is approximately 1.5 hr from Boston, 50min from Hartford, 45min from Providence, and 45min from New London. There are entrances on both Route 169 and Fairgrounds Road. Parking is available on Route 169, Route 205, and Fairgrounds Road for $3.00 (please see the map below) which is paid directly to the Mortlake VFD for the great assist with the parking.
From the North (Boston, MA)
Follow the Mass Pike (I-90) west to exit 10 (intersection with I-290/I-395)
Travel south on I-395 into Connecticut
Continue south on I-395 for approximately 16 miles
Take exit 37B onto Route 6 west
Travel west on Route 6 for approximately 4 miles to the intersection of Route 169 in Brooklyn
Turn left onto Route 169 south
The Brooklyn Fairgrounds is 1/2 mile ahead
From the West (Hartford, CT)
Travel east on I-84 to I-384 east
I-384 becomes Route 6 in Bolton
Travel east on Route 6 for roughly 40 minutes until reaching the intersection with Route 169 in Brooklyn
Turn right onto Route 169 south
The Brooklyn Fairgrounds is 1/2 mile ahead
From the East (Providence, RI)
Travel west on Route 6 into Connecticut
Continue west on Route 6 for approximately 7 miles to the intersection with Route 169
Turn left onto Route 169 south
The Brooklyn Fairgrounds is 1/2 mile ahead
From the South (Norwich/New London, CT)
Travel north on I-395 to exit 37
Take exit 37 onto Route 6 west
